This wikiHow teaches you how to download YouTube videos onto your computer. You can use an online service called Convert2MP3 to do this for lower-quality videos, or you can use a program called 4K Video Downloader to download HD videos of up to 4K definition. It's similarly possible to use VLC Media Player to stream YouTube videos into a file on your computer, resulting in videos of up to 1080p. While the methods here pertain to computers, you can also download YouTube videos on a smartphone. Keep in mind that, while downloading YouTube videos isn't illegal, it is against Google's terms of service; additionally, downloading copyrighted content (e.g., music videos) is illegal.

1
Using 4K Video Downloader

  1. 1
Download the 4K Video Downloader setup file. Go to https://www.4kdownload.com/products/product-videodownloader in your computer's web browser, then click Get 4K Video Downloader on the left side of the page. The 4K Video Downloader setup file will download onto your computer.
    • 4K Video Downloader is available on both Windows and Mac computers.[1]
  2. 2
Install 4K Video Downloader. Once the 4K Video Downloader setup file finishes downloading, you can install it by doing the following:
    • Windows — Double-click the setup file, click Yes when prompted, and follow the on-screen setup instructions.
    • Mac — Double-click the setup file, verify the installation if necessary, click and drag the 4K Video Downloader app icon onto the "Applications" folder, and follow any on-screen instructions.
  3. 3
Open YouTube. Go to https://www.youtube.com/ in your computer's web browser.
  4. 4
Go to a video you want to download. Search for the video you want to download onto your computer, or select one from the home page. The video should begin playing.
  5. 5
Copy the video's address. Click the video's address in the bar at the top of your browser's window, then press Ctrl+A (Windows) or Command+A (Mac) to fully select it and press Ctrl+C or Command+C to copy it.
  6. 6
Open 4K Video Downloader. If 4K Video Downloader didn't automatically open upon finishing its installation, click Start

    (Windows) or Spotlight

(Mac), then type in 4k video downloader and click (or double-click on a Mac) the 4K Video Downloader result.
  7. 7
Click Paste Link. It's in the top-left corner of the 4K Video Downloader window. Doing so will cause the 4K Video Downloader to extract the address you copied.
  8. 8
Select a video format. Click the "Format" drop-down box in the upper-right side of the window, then click the video format you want to use.
    • If you don't see "4K" listed in the quality options for a video which you know supports 4K, changing the video format from MP4 to MKV will usually prompt the 4K option to appear.
  9. 9
Select a quality. By default, the highest possible quality will be selected, but you can check the box next to a different quality (e.g., 1080p) if your computer doesn't support the highest quality.
    • For example, many laptop screens don't support 4K video, meaning that downloading a video in 4K is relatively pointless.
  10. 10
Click Download. It's at the bottom of the window. You can also select the download location. Your video will begin downloading onto your computer.
  11. 11
Open your video's location. Once your video finishes downloading, right-click it and then click Show in Folder in the resulting drop-down menu. This will cause a File Explorer (Windows) or Finder (Mac) window with your downloaded video to open, at which point you can double-click the video to play it in your computer's default video player.
    • On a Mac, you can hold down Control while clicking the video to prompt the right-click menu to appear.

  5. 5
Click mp3. This box is on the right side of the page. A drop-down menu will appear.
  6. 6
Click mp4. You'll find this option in the drop-down menu.
  7. 7
Select an MP4 quality. Click the "MP4 quality" drop-down box, then select your preferred quality (e.g., 720p) in the drop-down menu.
    • You cannot select a quality higher than the quality used in the video, and 1080p is the highest quality you can use.
    • Some videos will download in 720p quality even if you select 1080p.
  8. 8
Click convert. It's an orange button on the right side of the page. Convert2MP3 will begin converting the YouTube address into an MP4 file.
    • If you selected a quality that's higher than the video's quality or you tried to download a copyrighted video, you will receive an error message before the video can finish processing.
  9. 9
Click Download. This green button is in the middle of the page. Doing so will prompt the YouTube video to download onto your computer.
